Manufacturing process planning
Process planning for manufacturing includes selection of the manufacturing process that best suits the material type, size, shape of the part to be machined, and dimensional & geometric accuracy and surface finish required on the part. Further, selection of manufacturing equipment, tools and process parameters should aim at ensuring quality, efficiency and cost effectiveness in the manufacturing process. On completion of above, the capability of the process should be established through process capability studies in order to ensure quality, and control limits should be determined to monitor the process during routine manufacturing. In addition to quality, there should be continuous improvement efforts to reduce cycle time, setup time and consumption of tools and consumables. Apart from direct impact of these on cost, setup time will also indirectly help reduce lot size thereby reducing the manufacturing lead time. This will have further impact on the overall manufacturing cost.
CNC machining
Planning for machining a part on CNC machine includes 1. Machining process, 2. Part program development, 3.Debugging part program, 4. Setting up the machine 5. Program testing and 6. Program and set up prove out - 1st piece production. This requires thorough understanding on features of the CNC machine in it's 1. Construction, Machine co-ordinates and its measurement system, Machine Controls and operation, and on 2. Part program coding and program debugging, 5. setting up the machine - tool, fixture and part to be machined, and off-set measurement, 6. Program prove out - tool path interference, under cutting, over cutting, 1st piece production.
